As mentioned before, plastic is not only harmful to animals and ecosystems but to humans as well. To understand better how this can be possible, let’s follow an Exeter University research about human plastic ingestion.
Plastic has been found in about 700 species, ranging from birds, whales, fish, sea turtles, crustaceans, and even shellfish. Following the food chain, part of this plastic ends up in our bodies. But that’s not it! Scientists found microplastics present in drinking water as well! Altogether, an average person could be ingesting approximately 5 grams of plastic per week, which corresponds to the weight of one credit card!!
Although disturbing, this is only one of the possible ways in which we humans are ingesting plastic!
