Are we helping the environment when we use a biodegradable plastic grocery bag then? Let’s find out!
Researchers from the University of Plymouth examined the degradation of biodegradable plastic bags in the environments where they could potentially end up if discarded as litter: air, soil, and sea.
Results show that bags that were buried in the soil or submerged in the sea for up to 3 years could still carry a full load of groceries!
So when you throw away your biodegradable bag thinking that it will disappear in a few days, it could still be there three years later. Or worse, the bag could have ended up in our oceans and put the lives of many animals at risk. These shocking results from the study make us wonder about the labels that are used, and how they are interpreted. Think about it.
Now that you know the ins and outs of plastics that have a “bio” label, let’s find out what happens to a non-biodegradable plastic bottle once discarded!
